Choosing the Right Sandpaper Grit
Coarse Grits (40–80)
40 Grit: Heavy material removal — stripping paint, rough shaping wood, and leveling uneven surfaces.
60 Grit: Aggressive sanding for rough lumber, deck boards, and initial shaping projects.
80 Grit: General-purpose rough sanding — the starting grit for most woodworking projects.
Medium to Fine Grits (100–220+)
100–120 Grit: Smoothing after rough sanding — prepares wood for stain or primer.
150–180 Grit: Final sanding before finish coats — removes fine scratches and creates a smooth surface.
