How to Choose the Right Electrical Box
New Work vs Old Work Boxes
New Work Boxes: Nail-on boxes designed for new construction before drywall is installed. Feature pre-attached nails or brackets that fasten directly to studs.
Old Work (Remodel) Boxes: Cut-in boxes with swing-out clamps for retrofit installations in existing walls. No stud access required — clamps grip the drywall from behind.
Ceiling Boxes: Round or octagonal boxes rated for light fixtures and ceiling fans. Must be properly braced for fan-weight loads.
Box Fill Calculations
Volume Matters: NEC Article 314.16 requires each conductor, clamp, device, and ground wire to have sufficient box volume. Carlon boxes are stamped with cubic inch capacity.
Single Gang: 18 cu. in. standard, 22.5 cu. in. deep — handles most single-switch or outlet installations.
Double Gang: 32 cu. in. or more — required when multiple switches or outlets share one location. Always verify fill before installation.
