How to Choose the Right Fernco Coupling
Flexible vs. Shielded Couplings
Flexible Couplings (1000 Series): The most versatile option for connecting pipes of different materials (PVC to cast iron, clay to plastic, etc.). Ideal for underground repairs, sewer connections, and transitions. No special tools required — just stainless steel clamps and a screwdriver.
Shielded Couplings (ProFlex): Code-compliant for above-ground use. The stainless steel shield provides rigidity and meets building code requirements for exposed plumbing. Required for DWV (drain, waste, vent) connections visible in basements, crawlspaces, and mechanical rooms.
Sizing Your Coupling
Measure the outside diameter of both pipes you need to connect. Fernco couplings are sized by pipe outside diameter, not nominal pipe size. A 4" nominal PVC pipe has a different OD than 4" cast iron.
