Cape Coral & Fort MyersWhat's wrong with my yard?
The Southwest Florida problems our Cape Coral and Fort Myers counters hear every week, matched to the Ferti-lome products we keep on the shelf for them.
Dollarweed in St. Augustine
Year-round, peaks June – SeptemberWhat you see: Round, shiny, coin-sized leaves spreading through the lawn, worst where the sprinklers overlap.
What we recommend: Cut irrigation first — dollarweed is a wet-soil weed. Then Ferti-lome Dollar Weed Killer granules or Weed Free Zone liquid, both labeled safe on St. Augustine.
Brown patch & take-all root rot
June – October, and the first cool snap in NovemberWhat you see: Circular yellow-brown rings after a week of afternoon storms; blades pull out of the crown easily.
What we recommend: Stop evening watering and feeding, then Ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide (propiconazole) on a 14-day interval while the weather stays wet.
New plantings in sandy soil
Any planting day; heaviest October – MarchWhat you see: Fresh shrubs, palms and annuals wilting a week after planting even though they are being watered.
What we recommend: Ferti-lome Root Stimulator 4-10-3 at planting and every two weeks for the first month — the single product our counter recommends most.
Yellowing palms, citrus & hibiscus
March – OctoberWhat you see: Pale new growth with green veins (iron) or yellow older fronds (magnesium / potassium) on palms, citrus and tropicals.
What we recommend: Chelated iron for fast green-up, then a feeding program: Fruit, Citrus & Pecan Tree Food, Hibiscus & Tropical Food, or Tree & Shrub Food every 8 weeks in season.
Crabgrass & goosegrass
Pre-emergent February & September; post-emergent May – AugustWhat you see: Coarse, light-green clumps that explode in summer heat and leave bare dirt in winter.
What we recommend: Pre-emergent in February and again in September (Hi-Yield Grass & Weed Preventer with Treflan, Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper); Ferti-lome Weed-Out Crabgrass & Weed Killer on what has already come up.
Sod webworms, armyworms & tomato hornworms
July – OctoberWhat you see: Lawn chewed down overnight in ragged patches; moths flying up at dusk; stripped tomato leaves.
What we recommend: Bt (Caterpillar Killer) or Spinosad — both organic-friendly and safe around the vegetable garden.
Whitefly, aphids & scale on ornamentals
Year-round, worst in springWhat you see: Sticky leaves, black sooty mold, clouds of tiny white insects when you shake a hibiscus or ficus hedge.
What we recommend: Ferti-lome Tree & Shrub Insect Killer drench (systemic, months of protection) or Triple Action for a contact knock-down that also handles fungus.
Feeding St. Augustine, Bahia & Zoysia
October – May (summer blackout in Lee County)What you see: Lawn thinning and losing color six weeks after the last bag went down.
What we recommend: Ferti-lome Lawn Food Plus Iron 24-0-4 or For All Seasons II in spring and summer; Centipede or St. Augustine Weed & Feed where weeds are the real problem; a 10-0-14 Winterizer in October. Note Lee County fertilizer rules: no nitrogen or phosphorus June 1 – September 30.
Snails & slugs
June – OctoberWhat you see: Holes in hosta, basil and seedlings overnight; slime trails on the lanai.
What we recommend: Ferti-lome Come And Get It (iron phosphate, pet-safe) in beds; Hi-Yield Slug & Snail Killer pellets where you need a stronger bait.
Houseplants, orchids & succulents
Year-roundWhat you see: Fungus gnats, leggy growth and orchids that never rebloom.
What we recommend: The Houseplant Hero line: a feed for every plant type plus systemic granules and a ready-to-use spray for gnats and mealybugs.
The Ferti-lome Lines We Build Around
Six families that solve most of what walks through our doors — each formulated for tropical lawns, sandy soil and a twelve-month growing season.

Root Stimulator 4-10-3
The product our counter hands out most. Indole-butyric acid plus a starter feed cuts transplant shock and builds roots fast in sandy Florida soil. Use it on every tree, shrub, palm and annual the day it goes in the ground.

Weed Free Zone & Weed-Out
Selective broadleaf control labeled for St. Augustine, Bahia and Zoysia: dollarweed, clover, chickweed and Florida pusley without taking the lawn with them. Weed Free Zone works down to 45°F for winter weeds.

Systemic Insect Control
Tree & Shrub Insect Killer and Rose & Flower Food Plus Systemic are taken up through the roots and protect from the inside for weeks — the answer to whitefly, aphids and scale on hibiscus, ficus and crotons.

Liquid Systemic Fungicide
Propiconazole for brown patch, take-all root rot and gray leaf spot on turf, plus black spot and powdery mildew on ornamentals — the diseases our rainy season breeds. Hose-end and concentrate.
Specialty Plant Foods
Formulas built for what grows here: Hibiscus & Tropical 17-7-10, Bougainvillea & Flowering Vine, Fruit, Citrus & Pecan 19-10-5, Azalea & Rhododendron, Rose & Flower, and the 20-20-20 and 9-58-8 water-solubles.

Natural & Organic Options
Fish Emulsion 5-1-1, Bt and Spinosad caterpillar controls, Diatomaceous Earth, Neem Oil and iron-phosphate slug bait for the vegetable garden and anywhere kids and pets play.

Built for Florida's Unique Climate
Southwest Florida's sandy soils, intense sun, heavy rainfall, and year-round growing season demand products that work differently. Ferti-lome's formulas are designed for the specific challenges Southern homeowners face — from chinch bugs and dollarweed to nutrient-depleted soils that struggle to retain fertilizer. Their “Local Solutions for Local Problems” approach means every product is formulated with real-world regional conditions in mind.

Year-Round Lawn Care Calendar for SW Florida
Spring (March – May)
Fertilize: Lawn Food Plus Iron 24-0-4 or For All Seasons II as the grass breaks dormancy — the key feeding window for St. Augustine and Bahia.
Weeds: Weed-Out Crabgrass & Weed Killer on crabgrass that is already up; Weed Free Zone on dollarweed and clover.
Insects: Chinch bugs start as the weather warms. Treat preventively along driveways and sidewalks where they show first.
Summer (June – August)
Fertilize: Lee County's summer fertilizer ordinance blacks out nitrogen and phosphorus June 1 – September 30. Feed palms, citrus and ornamentals with their specialty foods instead of the lawn.
Pests: Peak season for chinch bugs, sod webworms and fire ants. Bt and Spinosad handle the worms without touching the vegetable garden.
Fungus: Afternoon storms breed brown patch and gray leaf spot. Liquid Systemic Fungicide on a 14-day interval while it stays wet.
Fall (September – November)
Fertilize: Winterizer 10-0-14 in October builds roots and potassium reserves without pushing top growth into the cool months.
Weeds: Winter annuals (chickweed, henbit, Florida pusley) germinate as nights cool — Weed Free Zone keeps working down to 45°F.
Plant: Our best planting season. Root Stimulator at every transplant.
Winter (December – February)
Minimal Feeding: Warm-season grasses slow down — skip heavy nitrogen. Chelated iron for color if the lawn is pale.
Garden: Tomatoes, peppers and herbs are in full swing. Fish Emulsion, 20-20-20 and Blooming & Rooting 9-58-8 keep them producing.
Prepare: New Lawn Starter 9-13-7 for sod and plugs going in before spring.
