How to Diagnose and Fix a Running Toilet
Common Causes
Worn Flapper: The most common culprit. A deteriorated flapper lets water leak from the tank into the bowl, triggering constant refills. Replace every 3–5 years.
Faulty Fill Valve: If the fill valve doesn't shut off at the correct water level, the tank overfills and water runs into the overflow tube.
High Water Level: Water set above the overflow tube drains continuously. Adjust the fill valve to set water about 1 inch below the overflow.
Quick Diagnostic Test
Food Coloring Test: Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. Wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, your flapper is leaking and needs replacement.
Overflow Check: Remove the tank lid and observe the water level. If water is flowing into the overflow tube, the fill valve needs adjustment or replacement.
Listen: A hissing sound indicates the fill valve is running. A phantom flush (no one used it) points to a flapper leak.
