How to Choose the Right Grit
Coarse Grits (36–60)
Heavy Stock Removal: Use 36–40 grit for stripping paint, leveling rough lumber, and removing heavy material quickly.
Shaping & Leveling: 50–60 grit smooths rough surfaces and prepares wood for intermediate sanding passes.
Floor Sanding: Start with 36–60 grit on drum sanders to strip old finishes and level uneven hardwood floors.
Medium to Fine Grits (80–220+)
General Purpose (80–120): The workhorse range for most sanding tasks — smoothing wood, prepping for primer, and removing light scratches.
Finish Sanding (150–180): Creates a smooth surface ready for stain or topcoat application with minimal visible scratch marks.
Fine Finishing (220+): Between-coat sanding, final surface prep, and achieving ultra-smooth finishes on paint and lacquer.
