Cape Coral & Fort MyersWhat's wrong with my yard?
The Southwest Florida problems our Cape Coral and Fort Myers counters hear every week, matched to the Hi-Yield products we keep on the shelf for them.
Chinch bugs
April – OctoberWhat you see: Yellow then straw-brown patches along driveways and sidewalks that keep growing no matter how much you water.
What we recommend: Confirm with the coffee-can test, then Hi-Yield Systemic Insect Killer granules or hose-end over the whole lawn, not just the dead spot.
Fire ant mounds
Year-round, peaks in the rainy seasonWhat you see: Mounds popping up after every rain, especially along the edges of beds and the lanai.
What we recommend: Treat the mound with Fire Ant Control with Acephate and broadcast granules across the yard so the colony does not just move twenty feet.
Broadleaf weeds, clover & chickweed
November – AprilWhat you see: Clover, chickweed and Florida pusley taking over thin spots in winter and spring.
What we recommend: Hi-Yield 2,4-D Selective Weed Killer (watch the rate on St. Augustine) or Weed & Feed 15-0-10 to feed and clean up in one pass.
Crabgrass & goosegrass
Pre-emergent February & September; post-emergent May – AugustWhat you see: Coarse, light-green clumps that explode in summer heat and leave bare dirt in winter.
What we recommend: Pre-emergent in February and again in September (Hi-Yield Grass & Weed Preventer with Treflan, Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper); Ferti-lome Weed-Out Crabgrass & Weed Killer on what has already come up.
Vegetable beds & soil building
Fall & winter garden, September – MarchWhat you see: Tomatoes, peppers and herbs stalling in sand that drains in minutes and holds nothing.
What we recommend: Bone meal, blood meal and potash to build the bed; Garden Fertilizer 8-10-8 through the season; aluminum or ammonium sulfate where the soil is too alkaline for blueberries, azaleas and gardenias.
Snails & slugs
June – OctoberWhat you see: Holes in hosta, basil and seedlings overnight; slime trails on the lanai.
What we recommend: Ferti-lome Come And Get It (iron phosphate, pet-safe) in beds; Hi-Yield Slug & Snail Killer pellets where you need a stronger bait.
Professional-Grade Solutions
Six categories of proven lawn and garden products formulated for the challenges of Southwest Florida's climate — from fire ants to fungus.

Fire Ant Control

Lawn Insect Control
Systemic Insect Killer granules and hose-end, Bug Blaster and Kill-A-Bug for chinch bugs, sod webworms, grubs, fleas and ticks. Malathion and the Indoor & Outdoor Broad Use concentrate cover the rest.

Selective Weed Killers
2,4-D Selective Weed Killer and 2,4-D Amine No. 4 for broadleaf weeds, Triclopyr Ester for brush and vines, and Postemergence Grass Killer for grassy weeds in beds — rated for St. Augustine when used at the labeled rate.

Killzall & Pre-Emergents
Killzall and Killzall 365 for driveways, fence lines and pavers; Grass & Weed Preventer with Treflan and Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper to stop crabgrass and goosegrass before they germinate.

Disease Control
Wettable Sulphur for powdery mildew, black spot and mites on roses and vegetables; Dormant Spray for scale on fruit trees. Pair with Ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide on turf.
Soil Amendments & Nutrients
Bone meal, blood meal, potash, triple super phosphate, ammonium sulfate, aluminum and manganese sulfate, hydrated lime — the single-nutrient bags that let you fix exactly what a soil test says is missing.

Expert Knowledge
Practical lawn and garden tips for Southwest Florida homeowners.
Controlling Common Florida Lawn Pests
Fire Ants
Hi-Yield Fire Ant Control with Acephate: Treat each mound per the label and do not disturb it first. For broadcast control, Hi-Yield Fire Ant Control granules across the entire yard.
Two-step method: Broadcast granules first, then treat individual mounds 3-5 days later for complete colony elimination. Fire ants are year-round in SW Florida — treat proactively before rainy season (June-September).
Chinch Bugs & Grubs
Chinch bugs: The #1 St. Augustine grass destroyer in Cape Coral and Fort Myers. Look for yellowing patches that spread outward from pavement. Hi-Yield Systemic Insect Killer granules or the hose-end spray over the whole lawn, watered in.
Grubs: Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone prevents white grub damage before it starts. Apply in late spring when grubs are feeding near the surface. Water in immediately with 1/2" of irrigation.
