In 1937, the Marine Electrolysis Eliminator Company (MEECO) developed a soot removal product under contract from the United States Department of Natural Resources. Annual Chimney Maintenance Schedule
Before Heating Season (Fall)
Inspect the flue: Check for creosote buildup, cracks, or obstructions. A flashlight and mirror can reveal deposits that need cleaning.
Brush the chimney: Use the correct size Meeco's Red Devil chimney brush with extension rods to remove soot and creosote from the full length of the flue.
Check gaskets: Inspect door gaskets on wood stoves and inserts for compression and wear. Replace with Meeco's gasket rope if gaps are visible.
During Heating Season (Winter)
Monitor creosote: Check the flue monthly during heavy use. Stage 1 (flaky) is normal; Stage 2 (shiny) and Stage 3 (glazed) require immediate treatment.
Use creosote remover: Apply Meeco's Red Devil creosote remover regularly to break down deposits and reduce fire risk.
