How to Solder Copper Fittings
Surface Preparation
Clean the pipe: Use emery cloth or a pipe-cleaning brush to remove oxidation from the outside of the pipe and inside of the fitting until the copper is bright and shiny.
Apply flux: Brush a thin, even layer of water-soluble flux paste onto both the pipe end and the fitting cup. Flux prevents oxidation during heating and helps solder flow into the joint.
Assemble dry: Push the fitting onto the pipe with a slight twist to distribute flux evenly around the joint.
Soldering Technique
Heat the fitting: Apply the torch flame to the fitting body (not the pipe), heating evenly around the joint. The fitting draws heat into the joint where solder needs to flow.
Touch solder to joint: When the flux sizzles and the copper changes color, touch lead-free solder to the joint. Capillary action pulls molten solder into the gap between pipe and fitting.
Wipe and cool: Use a damp rag to wipe excess solder for a clean, professional finish. Allow the joint to cool naturally — don't quench with water.
